He is currently the McCabe-Greer Professor of the History of the Civil War Era at Penn State.
His book, THE FATE OF LIBERTY: ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND CIVIL LIBERTY, won the Pulitzer Prize for History.
His most recent book, which just came out in paperback, is THE UNION DIVIDED: PARTY CONFLICT IN THE CIVIL WAR NORTH.
He is working on a book called WAR AND TERROR IN NORTH AMERICA, 1864-1867.
